Dr. Contreras loves to teach students how to get involved in the field of animal health at an early age. Instructing children on the importance of volunteering and shadowing different health professions allows children to understand what being in the animal health profession is all about.
Dr. Contreras also loves helping young adults understand that being a well-rounded student is critical for being a successful veterinarian because veterinarians play such a huge variety of roles, sometimes even within the same day. Involvement in various organizations helps children become the right kind of leader necessary to being a veterinarian.
Academics, specifically being strong in math and science, is critical for being accepted into a veterinary program. Dr. Contreras discusses his own previous challenges in the classroom and highlights the importance of getting proper help, using resources, understanding our strengths/areas to improve, and understanding our own styles of learning. We all learn differently and there is no excuse to not get the help needed to learn the material necessary to achieve your ultimate goal. In addition, Dr. Contreras discusses various cases and how he diagnoses and treats a variety of conditions, using videos and pictures to make the experience both engaging and interactive.
